Sinopse
Mas Atlas é também muito mais do que isso: é a busca pela conexão entre a grandeza e a pequenez, entre o sobrenatural e o natural, o elo que conecta o mundo dos humanos e o dos deuses. De acordo com o mito grego da antiguidade, Atlas era um titã condenado por Zeus a suportar o céu sobre os ombros no limite do mundo ocidental. Outro mito conta como o titã se tornou pedra após um encontro com Perseu, transformando-se o seu corpo na cordilheira hoje situada no norte de Marrocos, o limite mais ocidental conhecido do mundo antigo. Para além disso, o titã dá nome ao Oceano Atlântico e a colecções de mapas do mundo, e encontramos ainda a sua presença dentro do corpo humano: “Atlas” é o nome da primeira vértebra da coluna vertebral, suportando a cabeça por cima do corpo. Na viagem musical que atravessa Atlas – como atestam tantas mitologias, religiões e filosofias antigas por todo o mundo –, o som e o silêncio são vistos como forças que, não só criam, como mantêm o mundo unido.
Synopsis
Atlas is many more things: it is the quest for the connection between greatness and smallness, between the supernatural and the natural, the link connecting the world of humans and that of gods. As the ancient Greek myth has it, Atlas was a Titan condemned by Zeus to hold up the sky on his shoulders at the edge of the western world. Another myth tells of how the Titan was turned into stone after an encounter with Perseus, his body transformed into the mountain range today found in Northern Morocco, the westernmost known limit of the ancient world. Apart from the Titan giving his name to the Atlantic Ocean and to collections of maps of the world, we also find his trace inside the human body: Atlas is the name of the first vertebra of the spine, supporting the entire head on the rest of the body. On the musical journey crossing Atlas – as so many mythologies, religions, and ancient philosophies around the world attest – sound and silence are seen as forces that not only create, but also keep the world together.

Este álbum surgiu após um convite do seu amigo Constantino López, músico e engenheiro de som sediado em Múrcia, no sul da Espanha, para participar do seu novo projecto discográfico Primavera en el Atlas Colección. Esta colecção é composta por uma série limitada de álbuns de diferentes artistas, criados de forma a garantir a reconciliação do ouvinte com a música no seu estado mais puro e natural. Aspira a lançar luz sobre a arte dos músicos a partir de uma perspectiva próxima e até pessoal, enfatizando a interacção ao vivo e a sensação de tocarem juntos no mesmo espaço. Atlas é, portanto, o nome de um álbum, o projecto de vida de Constantino e o título da última faixa do álbum, composta por Efrén.
Programme notes
This album came into being following an invitation from their friend Constantino López, a musician and sound engineer based in Murcia, southern Spain, to participate in his new discographic project “Primavera en el Atlas Colección”. The collection consists of a limited series of records by different artists, created in such a way as to guarantee the reconciliation of the listener with the music in its purest and most natural state. It aspires to shed light on the art of musicians from a close and even personal perspective by emphasising live interaction and the feeling of playing together in the same space. Atlas is thus an album name, the life project of Constantino, and the title of the last track in the album composed by Efrén.

Um novo álbum de Efrén López e Christos Barbas é sempre uma boa notícia, especialmente se for o primeiro deles como dueto acústico, o culminar de 20 anos de musicalidade e amizade compartilhadas. Em Atlas, os dois músicos reconectam-se através do poder do dueto acústico e da sua simplicidade por meio de uma série de essencialmente novas composições e melodias de origem medieval e otomana, intercaladas com improvisações extensas, minimais e texturais. Ao longo de anos de interacção mútua e conhecimento partilhado, a dupla desenvolveu uma espécie de vocabulário comum, um léxico baseado nas disciplinas musicais que cada um estudou em paralelo e que são aqui justapostas em vários momentos com amplo espaço para improvisação, silêncio e meditação.
Efrén López nasceu em Valência, em 1972. É músico, compositor, produtor e engenheiro de som especializado em instrumentos de cordas dedilhadas do Mediterrâneo Oriental, Médio Oriente e Ásia Central. Estudou sanfona e as técnicas de vários instrumentos do Mediterrâneo Oriental, e participou em inúmeros projectos com músicos de toda a Europa, mundo árabe, Turquia, Irão e Índia. É fundador dos colectivos Trio Petrakis/López/Chemirani, L’Ham de Foc, Evo, Aman Aman, EAR e Sabir, com quem se apresenta em todo o mundo, além de dar workshops regulares sobre técnica instrumental e teoria da música modal. Desde 2005, organiza workshops de música tradicional na região de Valência, aproximando as formas tradicionais dos músicos locais.
Christos Barbas, um dos músicos mais multifacetados e criativos da Grécia, é multi-instrumentalista e compositor. Desde tenra idade, estudou flauta de bisel, música barroca, harmonia, contraponto, tendo completado os seus estudos de música ocidental em 2002. Desde 2003, concentrou-se no estudo do ney e da música sufi e otomana clássica. Toca vários instrumentos de diferentes culturas, incluindo kaval, piano, bansuri e flauta irlandesa. Compõe, também, numa variedade de estilos, incluindo música para dança contemporânea, teatro, cinema e música modal. Leccionou na Universidade de Música Popular e Artes Tradicionais (Grécia) e na Macedónia (Salónica). Ensina no Labyrinth, em Creta, e em outros centros culturais, e é Director Artístico do Labyrinth Catalunya.
Biographies
A new album by Efrén López and Christos Barbas is always good news, especially if it is their first as an acoustic duet, the culmination of 20 years of shared musicianship and friendship. On Atlas, the two musicians reconnect with the power of the acoustic duet and its simplicity through a series of mostly new compositions and melodies of medieval and Ottoman origins interspersed with extended, minimal and textural improvisations. Through years of mutual interaction and shared knowledge, the duo have developed a kind of common vocabulary, a lexicon based on the musical disciplines that each of them have studied in parallel, and which are juxtaposed at various points with extensive space for improvisation, silence and meditation.
Efrén López was born in Valencia, Spain, in 1972. He is a musician, composer, producer, and sound engineer specialising in plucked string instruments from the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Central Asia. He has studied hurdy gurdy and the techniques of various Eastern Mediterranean instruments and participated in countless projects with musicians from all over Europe, the Arab world, Turkey, Iran, and India. He is founder of Trio Petrakis/López/Chemirani, L’Ham de Foc, Evo, Aman Aman, EAR, and Sabir, performing all over the world and giving regular workshops on instrumental technique and theory of modal music. Since 2005 he has organised traditional music workshops in the region of Valencia in Spain, bringing traditional forms closer to local musicians.
Christos Barbas, one of the most multifaceted and creative musicians from Greece, is a multi-instrumentalist and composer. From an early age, he studied the recorder, baroque music, harmony, counterpoint, and completed his studies of Western music in 2002. Since 2003 he has focused on the study of the ney, and on Sufi and classical Ottoman music. He plays several instruments from different cultures, including kaval, piano, bansuri, and Irish whistles. He also composes in a variety of styles, including music for contemporary dance, theatre, cinema, and modal music. He has taught at the University of Popular Music and Traditional Arts (Greece) and in Macedonia (Thessaloniki). He teaches at Labyrinth in Crete and in other cultural centres and is the Artistic Director of Labyrinth Catalunya.
