Sejam bem-vindos a Idanha-a-Nova.

No pousio do Inverno.
O lugar do centro
Filipe Faria
Director, Festival Fora do Lugar + Arte das Musas
O centro é um lugar estranho. Desenhamos mapas, medimos distâncias, traçamos estradas, escolhemos capitais e inventamos margens. Mas depois chegamos. Ficamos um pouco. E as coisas parecem fora do lugar...
Talvez o centro seja simplesmente onde estamos.
A Festival of the World, with Idanha-a-Nova at its Epicentre

Fora do Lugar — Early Musics International Festival returns to the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova from 20 November to 5 December 2026. Reaching its 15th edition is a milestone that fills us with pride and satisfaction.
We celebrate a festival of the world, with Idanha-a-Nova at its epicentre, where artistic creation without borders finds its fullest expression in our UNESCO Creative City of Music.
Watching the festival grow and establish itself year after year brings immense joy to the Municipality of Idanha-a-Nova. This singular journey owes much to the talent and persistence of its artistic director, Filipe Faria, and the entire Arte das Musas team, with the close support of the municipal services, which also play a crucial role. It is only right, therefore, to acknowledge the extraordinary work of this group of professionals, who shape a programme of international standing with rare artistic sensitivity.
Fora do Lugar stands out as an exceptional event by returning historical heritage to the community and inhabiting churches, chapels, castles and former community halls with secret concerts, walk-and-talks through nature and artistic presentations. By spreading its activities across the different villages and parishes of the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, the festival makes culture accessible to all and transforms our geography into a multicultural meeting place.
This sonic journey brings warmth to the cold days of autumn and reveals the power of sharing and proximity in bringing people together. I invite you to visit our region and join us in this unique experience.
Welcome to Idanha-a-Nova.

I believe there are few who would fail to recognise the intrinsic bond between people and music in Idanha. A dialogue lost in time, whose beginnings no one can precisely place. Nor is there any need to.
If it is true that one does not become a UNESCO Creative City by chance, the reason for it takes us further still, into a reality that speaks for itself. Land and Music, hand in hand, indifferent to time, eager to make themselves known.
It is not difficult to accept the invitation. One only has to pay attention — something that, fortunately, many do. As for the rest, let us hope they escape the atavistic torpor of indifference and discover that days and nights become richer when music is heard. Both near and far. In the fullness of the landscape we are fortunate enough to inhabit. Even when the season invites us to withdraw. In the fallow of winter.
For fifteen years, tirelessly, Fora do Lugar has helped us along this path. When the land sleeps, music spreads and covers these places with sound, opening unexpected doors to renewed sensory experience.
What does ‘outside’ mean? What does ‘much’ mean? There is no other answer to what the right measure might be. It does not mistake the part for the whole. It is a movement within a complex mechanism constantly in motion, everywhere, material and immaterial at once. A movement that does not impose, but invites us to choose without prejudice. So that no one need feel excluded by the choice they make, in a spirit of openness that can define an entire way of looking at the world. Particularly this one, which is closest to us.
Within the delicate process of cultural construction, choosing is an objective right subject to the subjective will of each individual. Each of us must decide whether or not to be inclusive in our experience of the world. This is the measure of freedom we exercise each year in these places, in this time and beyond it. This is one of the greatest forms of beauty Idanha has to offer. Because there is a choice. It is there for us and is untroubled by whatever decisions we make about it. It simply accepts, in an act of pure generosity, expecting nothing in return. Out there, in the place and time where the splendours of sunset form the more than perfect interlude between what the day has left us and the anticipation of what the night will bring.
In Idanha, from the sleeping earth, music rises.
The Place at the Centre
Filipe Faria
Director, Festival Fora do Lugar + Arte das Musas
The centre is a strange place. We draw maps, measure distances, plot roads, choose capitals and invent margins. But then we arrive. We stay a while. And things seem out of place...
Perhaps the centre is simply where we are. Or where we look from. Or where someone is waiting for us.
For a long time now, we have been shifting the lines on maps — and, with them, shifting the centre itself. Without much ceremony. Sometimes it is in an echoing space. At other times, in a street, along a dirt track, around a table, beneath a tree. In the morning we walk, in the afternoon we talk and, once night falls, we stop at that exact point where someone takes a breath before beginning.
We do not bring the world to Idanha. That would be a strange idea. The world is already here. It always has been.
It arrives by different paths, with other voices, other languages, other memories. It encounters those that were already here and, for a while, it becomes difficult to tell who came from far away. Far from where?
Distances are relative. So are centres.
We learn that quickly here. A small village can become immense. An open door can take us much further than a road. There are places that seem small from a distance and, when we arrive, contain everything we care about. We only need to pay attention. Perhaps that is the secret — if there is one.
For a few days, we move. From one place to another, from one voice to another, from the cold outside in, from inside back out. We carry the centre with us, although perhaps it is the other way round. Perhaps it is the places that carry us.
And so we arrive once again.
Not at the centre of the world — we do not know where it is and are suspicious of anyone who claims to know — but at this exact place, at this exact moment, with those people. That is enough.
For these few days, the centre will be here.
