BIOGRAFIA BIOGRAPHY
A SPEA – Sociedade Portuguesa para o Estudo das Aves é uma Organização Não Governamental de Ambiente que trabalha para a conservação das aves e dos seus habitats em Portugal, promovendo um desenvolvimento que garanta a viabilidade do património natural para usufruto das gerações futuras.
A SPEA desenvolve projetos em todo o território nacional e também em parceria no estrangeiro (ex.: Cabo Verde, São Tomé e Príncipe, Malta e Grécia). A sensibilização ambiental e a promoção do Birdwatching são também duas das suas prioridades.
Mais especificamente, realizamos censos por todo o país (Portugal continental e ilhas) para produzir indicadores do estado da biodiversidade. Os nossos cientistas fazem parte de diversos projetos incluindo entender e mitigar o impacte das linhas elétricas nas aves; fazemos também parte da equipa que trabalha na gestão sustentável das Berlengas (conservar os seus habitats, plantas endémicas e populações de aves marinhas), o restauro da floresta Laurissilva nos Açores e proteção do priolo, e até sensibilizar o público para as mudanças climáticas e o problema da poluição. Além disto tudo, participamos na gestão do Espaço Interpretativo da Lagoa Pequena que está situado numa das mais importantes zonas de migração e nidificação de aves da Europa.
E porque é que isto é importante? Estudos demonstram que 40% das espécies de aves selvagens do Mundo estão em declínio, e 1 em 8 espécies estão ameaçadas de extinção. Esta estatística inclui aves como o Britango, o Sisão e a Águia-imperial, mas aves comuns estão também a diminuir em números. As aves são bons indicadores do estado geral dos ecossistemas, ou seja, campos ricos em aves são campos saudáveis e livres de poluição.
Como associação sem fins lucrativos, dependemos do apoio dos sócios e de diversas entidades para concretizar as nossas ações. Fazemos parte de uma rede mundial de organizações de ambiente, a BirdLife International, que atua em 120 países e tem como objetivo a preservação da diversidade biológica através da conservação das aves, dos seus habitats e da promoção do uso sustentável dos recursos naturais. Em Portugal, SPEA foi reconhecida como entidade de utilidade pública em 2012.
A SPEA pertence também à Coligação C7, que junta as sete maiores organizações de ambiente de Portugal na defesa do ambiente e na luta por políticas sustentáveis. Os restantes membros da C7 são: ANP|WWF – Associação Natureza Portugal, FAPAS – Associação Portuguesa para a Conservação da Biodiversidade, GEOTA – Grupo de Estudos de Ordenamento do Território e Ambiente, LPN – Liga para a Protecção da Natureza, Quercus – Associação Nacional de Conservação da Natureza e ZERO – Associação Sistema Terrestre Sustentável.
SPEA – Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds is n non-governmental environmental organization working for the conservation of birds and their habitats in Portugal and promoting a development that guarantees the viability of the natural heritage for the enjoyment of future generations.
We develop projects throughout Portuguese territory and also in partnership abroad (eg. Cape Verde, Sao Tome and Principe, Malta and Greece). Raising environmental awareness and promoting birdwatching are also two of our priorities.
More specifically, we conduct census across the country (continental Portugal and islands) in order to produce indicators of the state of our biodiversity. Our scientists are part of many projects including understanding and mitigating the impact of power lines on birds; we are also part of the team that works on the sustainable management of Berlengas (conserving their habitats, endemic plants and seabird populations), the restoration of the Laurel forest in the Azores and the protection of the Azores Bullfinch, and even raising public awareness around climate change and pollution. Furthermore, we participate in the management of the Lagoa Pequena Interpretation Center, which is located in one of the most important bird migration and nesting areas in Europe.
And why is all of this so important? Studies show that 40% of bird species in the world are in decline, and that 1 in 8 species are threatened with extinction. This statistic includes species such as the Egyptian Vulture, the Little Bustard and the Spanish Imperial Eagle, but common birds are also declining in numbers. Birds are very good indicators of the general health of ecosystems and so fields that are rich in birds are healthy fields with low levels of pollution.
As a non-profit association, we depend on the support of our partners and various entities to carry out our actions. We are part of a worldwide network of environmental organizations, BirdLife International, which operates in 120 countries and aims to preserve biological diversity through the conservation of birds, their habitats and the promotion of sustainable use of natural resources. In Portugal, SPEA was recognized as a public utility entity in 2012.
SPEA is also part of the C7 Coalition, which brings together the seven largest environmental organisations in Portugal to defend the environment and advocate for sustainable policies. The other members of the C7 are: ANP|WWF – Associação Natureza Portugal, FAPAS – Portuguese Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity, GEOTA – Group for Studies of Spatial Planning and Environment, LPN – League for the Protection of Nature, Quercus – National Association for Nature Conservation, and ZERO – Sustainable Earth System Association.

História
A SPEA foi fundada a 25 de novembro de 1993. Começámos por ser uma pequena organização dedicada sobretudo à observação e estudo das aves, mas ao longo dos anos fomos crescendo e evoluindo. Somos hoje uma das maiores organizações não-governamentais de ambiente do país, com provas dadas de que é possível fazer a diferença.
Desde 1999 que somos o parceiro português da BirdLife International, uma rede internacional de organizações de ambiente que atua em mais de 100 países. A SPEA é reconhecida como entidade de utilidade pública desde 2012.

History
SPEA was founded on 25 November 1993. We started as a small organisation mostly focused on birdwatching and research, but over the years we grew and evolved. Today we are one of the largest environmental NGOs in Portugal, and have proven that it’s possible to make a difference.
In 1999 we became the Portuguese partner of BirdLife International, an international network of environmental NGOs which acts in over 100 countries. SPEA is recognised as a public benefit entity (“entidade de utilidade pública”) since 2012.
