Wild Strings Trio é um ensemble acústico que transcende fronteiras de género e de geografia. Formado em Liubliana, em 2014, por músicos de três países — Petra Onderufová (Eslováquia, violino), Aleksander Kuzmić (Eslovénia, guitarra) e Toby Kuhn (França, violoncelo) — o trio inspira-se nas tradições da Europa Central e de Leste, na complexidade rítmica dos Balcãs e no espírito improvisador do jazz.
Nascido no dinâmico movimento internacional Ethno, o grupo reinventa a música tradicional em vez de a reproduzir. A sua sonoridade funde expressão popular e contemporânea através de composições originais e arranjos inventivos que reflectem as origens de cada membro: o lirismo jazzístico do violino de Petra, a guitarra percussiva e de influências balcânicas e flamencas de Aleksander, e o violoncelo expressivo e cheio de groove de Toby. Juntos, criam um universo sonoro equilibrado e dinâmico, repleto de energia, polifonia e impulso rítmico.
O que distingue o trio é o seu compromisso com a espontaneidade e a interacção ao vivo. A improvisação está no cerne das suas actuações, moldando tanto os solos como a estrutura das peças. O álbum de estreia, Lost Weekend (2016), apresentou a sua fusão singular de influências populares, jazzísticas e clássicas. O segundo, Bendjistan (2019), imaginou um país sem fronteiras, onde as tradições se cruzam livremente — metáfora do ethos artístico do trio. O disco foi aclamado pela paixão, virtuosismo e vitalidade rítmica.

Wild Strings Trio is an acoustic ensemble that transcends genre and geography. Formed in Ljubljana in 2014 by musicians from three different countries — Petra Onderufová (Slovakia, violin), Aleksander Kuzmić (Slovenia, guitar), and Toby Kuhn (France, cello) — the trio draws inspiration from Central and Eastern European traditions, the rhythmic complexity of the Balkans, and the improvisational spirit of jazz.
Emerging from the vibrant international Ethno scene, the group reimagines traditional music rather than reproducing it. Their sound merges folk and contemporary expression through original compositions and inventive arrangements that reflect each member’s background: Petra’s jazz-inflected violin lyricism, Aleksander’s percussive Balkan–flamenco guitar, and Toby’s expressive cello grooves. Together, they create a balanced and dynamic sound world full of energy, polyphony, and rhythmic drive.
What distinguishes Wild Strings Trio is their commitment to spontaneity and live interaction. Improvisation lies at the heart of their performances, shaping both solos and structure. Each concert becomes a musical conversation — an exchange of ideas and emotions that bridges styles and cultures through the universal language of music.
Their debut album Lost Weekend (2016) introduced their unique fusion of folk, jazz, and classical influences. The follow-up, Bendjistan (2019), imagined a borderless country where traditions meet freely — a metaphor for the trio’s artistic ethos. Petra Onderufová nasceu em Banská Bystrica, Eslováquia. Começou a tocar violino desde tenra idade, antes de passar para o violoncelo sete anos mais tarde. Durante os estudos no Conservatório de Brno (República Checa), percebeu que a música clássica não era para si, regressando ao violino e descobrindo o jazz e a música do mundo. Licenciou-se em jazz violin no Conservatório de Klagenfurt (Áustria) com Max Grosch em Junho de 2015 e, pouco depois, completou uma licenciatura em Composição e Arranjo de Jazz com Johannes Berauer.
O seu estilo musical desenvolveu-se através dos estudos, das viagens e das colaborações. Graças a uma formação rigorosa em jazz, tornou-se uma intérprete versátil, à vontade tanto em tocar bebop num clube de jazz como em interpretar melodias folclóricas búlgaras num palco de festival. Após concluir os estudos, expandiu-se para a composição e arranjo de jazz, acrescentando uma nova dimensão ao que continua a ser o seu maior dom como intérprete: partilhar com o público a sua energia ilimitada, virtuosidade e inventividade. É uma intérprete, compositora e professora activa nos domínios do jazz e da música etno, tendo gravado e tocado com inúmeros grupos, incluindo Wild Strings Trio, Petra Onderuf Quartet e Etnohisteria World Orchestra. Petra tem actuado em toda a Europa, nas Américas e na Ásia, em festivais e salas de prestígio. Compondo também para agrupamentos e big bands, a sua obra foi interpretada pelo HRT Big Band croata, e colabora em produções de teatro, dança e em projectos cinematográficos.
Petra Onderufová was born in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. She began playing the violin at a tender age, before switching to the cello seven years later. During her studies at the Conservatory in Brno (Czech Republic), she realised that classical music was not for her, leading her back to the violin and to the discovery of jazz and world music. She graduated in jazz violin at the Conservatory in Klagenfurt (Austria) with Max Grosch in June 2015 and soon after completed a degree in Jazz Composition and Arrangement with Johannes Berauer. Her musical style developed through studies, travels, and collaborations. Thanks to a rigorous jazz education, she emerged as a versatile performer, equally at ease playing bebop in a jazz club one night and Bulgarian folk tunes on a festival stage the next. After completing her studies, she expanded into jazz composition and arrangement, adding a new dimension to what remains her greatest gift as a performer: sharing her limitless energy, virtuosity, and inventiveness with the audience. She is an active performer, composer, and educator in jazz and ethno music, having recorded and performed with numerous ensembles including Wild Strings Trio, Petra Onderuf Quartet, and Etnohisteria World Orchestra. Petra has toured Europe, the Americas, and Asia, performing at prestigious festivals and venues. She also composes for ensembles and big bands, with her work performed by the Croatian national HRT Big Band, and collaborates on theatre and dance productions as well as film recordings.
Toby Kuhn nasceu numa família artística multilingue e esteve imerso em música clássica desde criança. Iniciou-se no violoncelo aos sete anos e dedicou vinte anos ao estudo do instrumento —primeiro na Borgonha natal, depois em Paris e finalmente em Montreal—culminando numa licenciatura em Violoncelo e Teoria Musical na Universidade McGill. Procurando experiências além da educação formal, viajou pela Europa, tocando nas ruas e explorando livremente as possibilidades do violoncelo, criando uma ligação mais profunda com as pessoas e os lugares por onde passava.
Instalando-se finalmente em Liubliana, colaborou com músicos diversos e desenvolveu uma fascinação pela música folclórica dos Balcãs e pela sua emoção intensa e crua. Participando regularmente no EthnoHistEria e no Floating Castle Festival, tornou-se parte activa da cena folclórica europeia, tocando Americana numa noite, Balkan-Ethno-Jazz na seguinte, enquanto também interpretava canções tradicionais britânicas e danças francesas. Actualmente, vive sem residência fixa, deslocando-se entre a Eslovénia, Bélgica, França, Reino Unido e outros locais—como Uzbequistão, China, Irão, Canadá, Suécia e Estados Unidos—seguindo a estrada e a música onde quer que o levem.
Toby Kuhn was born into a multilingual artistic family and immersed in classical music from childhood. He took up the cello at age seven and pursued twenty years of study—first in his native Burgundy, then in Paris, and finally Montreal—culminating in a bachelor’s degree in both Cello and Music Theory from McGill University. Seeking experiences beyond formal education, he travelled across Europe, busking and exploring the cello’s possibilities in improvised contexts, forging a deeper connection with people and places along the way.
Eventually settling in Ljubljana, he collaborated with diverse musicians and developed a fascination with Balkan folk music and its intense, raw emotion. Through regular participation in EthnoHistEria and the Floating Castle Festival, he became an active part of the European folk scene, performing Americana one night, Balkan-Ethno-Jazz the next, while also engaging with British folk and French dance music. He now lives without a fixed base, moving between Slovenia, Belgium, France, the UK, and further afield — to Uzbekistan, China, Iran, Canada, Sweden, and the US—following the road and the music wherever they lead.
Aleksander Kuzmić é um guitarrista, cantor, compositor e multi-instrumentista esloveno, a trabalhar como artista independente. A sua prática artística diversa abrange música original, performance ao vivo e colaborações em teatro e dança contemporânea. Iniciou a carreira em musicais de renome, como Cats, Hair e Jesus Christ Superstar, e posteriormente integrou colectivos de teatro alternativo, incluindo Gnosis, Cirkus Kansky e o grupo internacional SubPoetics International. Ao longo dos anos, fundiu a expressão musical com performance artística, teatro de rua e projectos interdisciplinares.
Aleksander enriqueceu a sua linguagem musical através de viagens pela Europa, Ásia, África e Austrália. Profundamente inspirado por Espanha — especialmente pela tradição flamenca de Granada — estudou com mestres locais, moldando um estilo distinto, energético e com groove, infundido de raízes balcânicas. Lançou quatro álbuns a solo (Ognjeni Veter, Behind Nine Hills, Flama Negra, Mantra of the Soul) e participou em inúmeros projectos de grupo, incluindo a banda funk Dirty Sanchez e o internacionalmente aclamado Wild Strings Trio. A sua obra combina música do mundo, ritmos flamencos e profundidade emocional. Para além das actuações, compõe activamente para teatro e dança contemporânea, colaborando com instituições como o Dance Theatre Ljubljana e diversos grupos internacionais. Aleksander Kuzmić is a Slovenian guitarist, singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist working as a freelance artist. His diverse practice spans original music, live performance, and collaborations in theatre and contemporary dance. He began his stage career in renowned musicals such as Cats, Hair, and Jesus Christ Superstar, later joining alternative theatre collectives including Gnosis, Cirkus Kansky, and the international group SubPoetics International. Over the years, he has merged musical expression with performance art, street theatre, and interdisciplinary projects.
Aleksander has enriched his musical language through travels across Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. Deeply inspired by Spain—especially the flamenco tradition of Granada — he studied under local masters, shaping a distinctive, energetic, groove-driven style infused with Balkan roots. He has released four solo albums (Ognjeni Vweter, Behind Nine Hills, Flama Negra, Mantra of the Soul) and participated in numerous group projects, including the funk band Dirty Sanchez and the internationally acclaimed Wild Strings Trio. His work blends world music, flamenco rhythms, and emotional depth. In addition to performing, he actively composes for contemporary theatre and dance, collaborating with institutions such as Dance Theatre Ljubljana and various international ensembles. Aleksander continues to develop a unique artistic voice that bridges music, movement, and storytelling across cultures.
